Estonia condemns the killing of 21 Egyptian citizens in Libya by ISIL

17.02.2015

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said that the international community must do everything possible to stop the violence of ISIL. The foreign minister condemned the bloodshed by ISIL in Libya, during which the terrorist organization brutally killed 21 Egyptian citizens. “Any such conduct is unacceptable and compels us to unite our forces further against ISIL,” she added.

According to Pentus-Rosimannus, terrorism poses a serious security threat to the Middle East region, Europe and the wider international community. “The fight against aggressive separatism, especially against ISIL, is the united struggle of the international community, regardless of ethnicity or religion,” the minister stressed. She added that the fight against ISIL requires a comprehensive and long-lasting effort by the international community.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Arab League, Gulf Cooperation Council, and many authoritative Islamic religious leaders have also repeatedly condemned the activities of ISIL.

Estonia, along with 60 other countries belongs to the Anti-ISIL Coalition. “In the fight against ISIL, it is important to strengthen cooperation in restricting the movement of foreign fighters, controlling the flow of terrorist cash and inhibiting the spread of extremist ideas,” Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus said. “Estonia has supported the armed forces of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government by donating ammunition. We have also contributed to United Nations activities in Iraq and contributed to alleviating the humanitarian situation of Syrian refugees,” she added.

Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus offered her condolences to Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. “We express our sincere condolences to the victims’ families and everyone affected by this shocking bloodshed,” the foreign minister wrote in her letter of condolence. Egypt has declared a week of mourning.
