Foreign Minister Pentus-Rosimannus: ISIS is a threat to European security

05.03.2015

The foreign ministers of the counter-ISIS coalition that gathered for the first time in Brussels stated in their joint statement that the fight against the extremist terrorist organisation in Iraq and Syria requires the long-term effort of the international community.

“Estonia unequivocally condemns ISIS’s brutal attacks and massive human rights abuses,” said Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus, who took part in the meeting.

According to the Minister, ISIS is not only a threat to the Middle East but also to Europe, because the spread of extremist ideology and foreign fighters that go from Europe to the conflict region undermine the security of all the countries that attended the meeting.

Estonia supports the goals of the coalition with a total of 270,000 euros to alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe in the region and the donation of ammunition to Kurdish forces.

The international counter-ISIS coalition led by the United States of America brings together over 60 countries and organisations. The primary goal of the coalition is to support the efforts of the central government of Iraq in fighting ISIS. Besides air strikes on ISIS positions, the coalition prevents financing of the terrorist organisation and foreign fighters from going to the region, and it provides extensive humanitarian aid.

The Syrian civil war has given ISIS an opportunity to expand its area of influence in Iraq and Syria fast, and it has carried out abuses against the civilian population. The United States of America with the strong support of the international community and at the request of the Iraq government began air strikes against the organisation in August this year.
