Pentus-Rosimannus: Electoral observers’ access and security must be ensured in Eastern Ukraine

09.07.2015

Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus met with the Director of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), Michael Georg Link in Tallinn yesterday.

At the meeting, they discussed the report drawn up by the ODIHR regarding parliamentary elections in March of this year and suggestions to further improve the conduct of elections. The Foreign Minister praised the organization's work in promoting democracy. “The recommendations in the report largely coincide with the direction in which we are moving already,” the Foreign Minister said.

According to Michael Georg Link, Estonia is a valuable partner in the OSCE. “We at the ODIHR highly appreciate the close co-operation with the Estonian parliament and government in implementing the recommendations of our reports.” Link said. “Estonia is a vital player in the group of Nordic-Baltic countries and we sincerely value their support,” he added.

Also under discussion were the situation in Ukraine and local elections planned for autumn. According to the Estonian Foreign Minister, local elections can only be legitimate if they are conducted in accordance with Ukrainian law and ODIHR standards. “Currently however, it is almost impossible to carry out fair and transparent elections in Eastern Ukraine which are in accordance to international law. The ODIHR must have access to the region in order to provide an independent assessment,” the Estonian Foreign Minister emphasised.

The Director of the ODIHIR, Michael Georg Link visited Estonia during the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s Annual Session, which is being held in Helsinki. The main focus of the current session is the situation in Ukraine.
